Sexual Health

While having more partners in consensual non-monogamy (ENM)—such as polyamory, open relationships, or swinging—can increase potential STI exposure, the proactive communication and safe sex practices below significantly reduce actual risk. We must strongly distinguishes ENM from cheating, emphasizing that cheating is dangerous due to its inherent deception and lack of transparency regarding sexual health. In contrast, ENM thrives on honesty and mutual agreement among all partners, fostering an environment where STI prevention can be more effectively managed. The guide below highlights that individuals in ENM relationships  must engage in frequent STI testing, consistent barrier use, and open discussions about sexual histories and boundaries. It also provides a toolkit for optimal sexual health in ENM, recommending regular testing (every 3-6 months), consistent use of condoms and dental dams, relevant vaccinations (HPV, Hepatitis B), and the establishment of sexual health agreements. The graphic also addresses challenges like societal stigma, the complexities of disclosure within a network of partners, and the importance of finding sex-positive healthcare providers who understand and support non-monogamous lifestyles.
